Insurance Checklist
The following is a list of items to obtain or things to do that will help streamline the insurance process:
- Obtain your insurance policy or a copy from your agent or insurance carrier
- To contact your insurance carrier, you can go to the LA Dept of Insurance web site at WWW.LDI.LA.GOV to obtain a phone number for your insurance carrier if you don't have it.
- Have a copy of your Driver's license to prove your address and residency
- A copy of your deed, or property tax paperwork
- Utility bills
- Any governmental mail addressed to your home
- Describe the loss
- Directions to your address
- Protect your property from further loss, i.e., place a tarp on the roof if damaged
- Take photos and videos of the property inside and out and if you have any of before the damage have them available. You might also try the web site for satellite images of before and after. WWW.MSNBC.MSN.COM/APPS/VE/KATRINA.HTM.
- Look for wind damage
- Look for damage by looters
- Look for any evidence of fire
- Look for any evidence of a broken pipe or overflowing toilet
- Create an inventory of household items, when purchased and approximate value ( we hope to have blank forms to help you on this item at the seminar)
- Contact your agent or insurance company
- Meet with adjusters
- Contact FEMA
- Have your social security number handy
- If you clean up, save the damaged material until the adjusters can see it
- And be sure to keep any and all receipts related to any and all expenses related to this storm and plan to keep them for at least three years.
